I am awake

One day a student came to Buddha and asked, "Are you the messiah?"
"No", answered Buddha.
"Then are you a healer?"
"No", Buddha replied.
"Then are you a teacher?" the student persisted.
"No, I am not a teacher."
"Then what are you?" asked the student, exasperated.
"I am awake", Buddha replied.

 Buddha's Philosophy:

We live in illusion and the appearance of things. There is a reality. We are that reality. When you understand this, you see that you are nothing, and being nothing, you are everything. That is all.

Four rules to remember:
First, rely on the spirit and meaning of the teachings, not on the words;
Second, rely on the teachings, not on the personality of the teacher;
Third, rely on real wisdom, not superficial interpretation;
And fourth, rely on the essence of your pure Wisdom Mind, not on judgmental perceptions.

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.

Pay no attention to the faults of others, things done or left undone by others.
Consider only what by oneself is done or left undone.

He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.

An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind

Words have the power to both destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world.

Wisdom is the light by day, and Right mindfulness is the protection by night.
If a man lives a pure life nothing can destroy him;
If he has conquered greed nothing can limit his freedom.

Neither fire nor wind, birth nor death can erase our good deeds.

You only lose what you cling to.

Literature helps us grow, both personally and intellectually. It opens doors for us. It stretches our minds. It develops our imagination, increases our understanding, and deepens our power of sympathy. It helps us see beauty in the world around us. It links us with the cultural, philosophical, and religious world of which we are a part. It enables us to recognise human dreams and struggles in different places and times. It helps us develop mature sensibility and compassion for all living beings .... It enables us to develop perspectives on events occurring locally and globally, and thereby it gives us understanding and control. It is one of the shaping influences of life. It makes us human.  Dear friends and fellow readers,

Thanks for dropping by for a visit! I hope you would find something interesting or learn something new from this site.

This website is dedicated to all Khmer literature lovers. You are welcome to pop in and have a look at some samples of my stories; read other stories, poems, song lyrics and memorable quotes; view some pictures and listen to some music.

I’ve been crazy about stories and music all my life. When I was a baby, my parents had to turn on a radio or a tape recorder to make me fall asleep. My early childhood fantasies evolved around my grandmother’s story telling every evening after dinner: Tunsay Jong Si Jek, A-kvak A-kven, Sobsith, Puos Kengkang, Puthsen Neang Kang-rey, Kjong Sunkh, Tib Sangva, Ream Ker, ... and so many more.

As soon as I was able to read, I buried my head in books. My favourite stories then were the Chinese Kungfu adventures (translated and published in Khmer). When I finished all the books in my family’s bookshelves, I started borrowing books from my classmates and schoolmates. During my high school years (in the 1980s), I spent most of my pocket money on illegal novels (stories published before 1975 and stories by contemporary anonymous writers whose works were hand-copied) that were rented out at illegal bookstores, and on illegal songs (produced before 1975; by singers like Sin Samut, Ruos Sereisothea, Paen Ron, Ung Nary, ... etc. ) which were sold at the black market. I would like to consider myself lucky to grow up in such interesting period of Cambodian history. Because I was deprived of easy access to the old era literature and music, I’ve learned to appreciate them more and greedily savoured them whenever I had the opportunities.

After years of reading other people’s stories, I started writing my own. The inspiration arose when I was so homesick and missed reading Khmer stories. I found writing fictions so enjoyable – to explore my imagination, to be involved in the world of my imaginary characters and their crises, to be able to decide some people’s fates, to twist and turn the events in the stories, to experience the power of language ... Oh, I couldn’t find other way of having more fun than writing stories. I laughed, I cried with the people I created.

I would like to thank those people who bought my books at the bookstores in Phnom Penh. I wish the books could be sold cheaper, but the cost for publishing them was so high that my family and I are dealing with an unprofitable business.   You may think I'm an old-fashioned person, but I love books (paper and ink form) and I want to share my stories with readers in a book form.  Hence, I really hope that those who bought my books did enjoy reading them.

Stories, songs, poems, lyrics, quotes, and images posted in this site are the properties of the respective authors, artists and producers. They are provided for educational purpose only.

My salute and appreciation to all writers, publishers, and readers who have kept our Khmer literature spirit alive no matter what circumstances!
